About our Sunday school teachersTeachers are the heart and soul of our Sunday school program. Their caring presence encourages new learning and new growth. Their teaching ministry is one of deed more than word, of setting an example more than wordy instruction. Each year, parents, grandparents, youth, non-parents, and others volunteer to join teaching teams. The Director of Religious Education and experienced teachers provide training, including workshops held throughout the year. Training topics include classroom management, ideas for teaching meditation and prayer in Sunday school, discussions on our unique Unitarian Universalist heritage, etc. Some of our teachers take advantage of further training opportunities such as the Mass. Bay District religious education conference held the first Saturday in October, and other workshops available in the Mass. Bay District. Advanced training in religious education is also available each summer at week-long conferences on religious education at two nearby Unitarian Universalist conference centers, Star Island in New Hampshire, and Ferry Beach in Maine. First Parish usually sends at least one person to each conference. Since training and guidance are easily available and since new teachers work with experienced teachers, newcomers to teaching and newcomers to Unitarian Universalism find that they, too, can succeed as Sunday school teachers. People who have never taught before are surprised at how satisfying teaching can be, and they are pleased at how well they meet its challenges. Express your thanks and appreciation to our Sunday school teachers. Tell them how much you appreciate their dedication. And sign up to teach Sunday school yourself! We need you! The Sunday school is growing. Plus, it's First Parish policy to try to keep class sizes small (ten or less). This means that we need more Sunday school teachers than before. We need at least one parent from each family to teach whenever possible. You'll get solid training, and you'll be assigned to work with an experienced teacher. When you fill out your registration form, please indicate which age group you will be able to teach. |
