Welcome to Sunday school programs at First Parish in Lexington! In our religious education classes, we help children to make meaning of their experiences within our framework of Unitarian Universalism within its full scope and continuing generativity. This year the focus for Sunday mornings will be establishing the connections between Unitarian Universalism and our Judeo-Christian heritage. Children will be making links between our principles and the sources from which they spring, responding in art that opens up their inner lives, and connecting to the people who have been an inspiring part of our Judeo-Christian history. Adults who teach will be on the same journey as the children, learning about themselves. I find that the teachers usually learn as much as, or more than, the children and youth by participating in the process of wondering that can happen in a classroom. My job is supporting this process, and especially to support those who give their time and talents to the children and youth. Of course, for children there's more to First Parish than just Sunday school classes that happen two to three Sundays per month. All children and youth attend the first twenty minutes of the Sunday morning worship service. Once a month, they also have their own worship service downstairs and one Sunday when they work on social justice projects. |
