First Parish in Lexington: Working for Social Justice

Social responsibility and social action have always been an important part of Unitarian Universalism. Early 19th century Unitarian ministers emphasized the worth of all human beings. They therefore affirmed the responsibility of individuals to improve society and thereby improve the lives of others. As a result, Unitarians and Universalists were instrumental in the antislavery movement, in the establishment of public education, in the early attempts at promoting public health, and the establishment of public libraries.
First Parish continues this tradition of a program of social action in the community. On-going projects include:
  • Dignity Dinner Program
Cooking for the Arlington Street Church 's  Friday Night Supper Program for the homeless .
First Parish prepares dinners for the homeless four times a year for scheduled Fridays. Sign ups for cooking (recipes and containers provided) and serving are on the piano during social hour a month before the dinner.

  • Roxbury Youth Program

The Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry supports programs for people in Boston's inner city.  Stand High/Stand United (SH/SU) is a program that provides weekend enrichment experiences for Roxbury and Dorchester youth.  Experiences range from learning about animals and working on plays to visiting local places like Drumlin Farm or hiking in the Blue Hills.  There are about 45 kids, ages 7-11, in the program this year with 20 volunteers from suburban churches.  There are two SH/SU events in a typical month:  Explorers Club at First Church in Roxbury on the second Saturday; and a field trip or outing usually on the fourth Saturday.

Taking the kids trick-or-treating on Halloween has become an annual SH/SU tradition.  This year 15 volunteers augmented by 5 MIT Delta Psi international students and six high school kids from one of the churches helped 40 Roxbury and Dorchester kids and 15 parents.  We brought them to First Unitarian Society church in West Newton, served them pizza and juice, helped them get dressed up in costumes that had been donated by three suburban churches, and helped them get painted up using supplies donated by Pearl Art Supply.  In the process, most adults ended up getting painted by the kids as well.  After the pizzas were consumed and the kids (and adults) were suitably disguised, we took the whole group to a neighborhood in Auburndale where the residents had decorated their yards, put on costumes themselves, and stocked up on candy to handle the onslaught.  Click here for photos from SH/SU .
