Preschool through First Grade
The Primary Cluster does not usually follow a set curriculum, but draws inspiration from many sources including curricula published by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and many others. Through a brief worship circle designed to meet the needs of curious and active young children, followed by a time of creative exploration, children in this class experience spiritual growth, creativity, and connection to their Unitarian Universalist (UU) community by being involved in hands-on rituals: stories, sharing, simple rhymes, finger plays, games, arts and crafts projects, dramatic play, and, weather permitting, lots of outdoor play. A “quiet corner” is always available for those needing time to rest, play alone, or have a story read to them. Primary Cluster children spend time each year celebrating the seasons and many holidays, learning about First Parish's proud history, touring the church building and grounds, and meeting the minister and other church staff. They are also introduced to the seven principles, some famous UUs (Henry David Thoreau, for example), and the concept of social action/justice through stories and active play. The Primary Cluster is led by a professional teacher, Krystal Flewelling, with support from a Classroom Guide (adult volunteer) each week. Parents pick up Primary Cluster children at noon. |
