A Diverse Community

We are a diverse community with members from various religious traditions and faiths. We encourage exposure to the difference and reject missions to convert others. Unitarian Universalism is based on the acceptance of the natural world and of scientific knowledge; thus, it has been called a rational faith.

Individual Religious Quest

The church provides the place, resources, and mutual support for each person to form his or her own beliefs, to act upon them with others, and to celebrate together the discoveries of a free and responsible faith.

At every stage of life, new questions arise. We provide stimulating and secure places where each of us can continue our individual religious quest in an atmosphere that respects our philosophical diversity and allows us to disagree. There is no dogma. We foster the emotional, spiritual, and intellectual potential for unlimited individual growth.

The Unitarian Universalist religious experience is the challenge to develop and create a religion for ourselves. The main concern of worship is to reveal who and what we are and what we can become; for some, the way one makes this journey is perhaps more important than reaching a destination.

Sources of Authority

Many sources of authority complement the authority of the individual. Among them is our Unitarian Universalist tradition, which provides a background for reflection on tenets that may be at odds with the norms of our faith. The human capacity for reason and scientific inquiry are authoritative as well, and are touchstones of the Unitarian Universalist tradition. Many of us believe that spirituality is not contra-reasonable but supra-reasonable, taking off from the boundary where reason cannot tread. Another authoritative religious source for us is the community. The love and nurturance, the feedback and critique that we find in a healthy congregation are invaluable resources in the shaping of a religious pilgrimage.

The Meaning of God

Within the context of our beliefs, the word God means different things, usually not a supreme being, to different individuals. The word can refer to a sense of wonder and mystery in our own existence and in the things around us, perhaps not the answer to a mystery but rather its acknowledgment.

Our Concept of Jesus

The life and teachings of Jesus are looked upon as those of a man whose philosophies - love, justice, and forgiveness - exemplify our concept of the moral and ethical issues of life.
